Marines ceremonially march out a cake Sept. 16 during the 3rd Marine Division’s 72nd anniversary ceremony on Camp Hansen. After the guest of honor ate the first piece of cake, the youngest and oldest Marines in the unit received a piece symbolizing the passing of tradition from older to younger generations. “We are a Marine Corps of tradition, concerned and thoughtful of our legacy,” said Maj. Gen. H. Seven Marines and a civilian contractor with Camp Hansen participated in the event. Lance Cpl. Carlos M. Chase and all service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their nation. Chase, fondly remembered as a devoted leader, was killed in action May 28, 2012, in Helmand province, Afghanistan. “A lot of men and women have given everything they had,” said Lt. Col. Josh K. Gelerter. “They leave behind families and friends. The competition was the culminating event of the 2014 Spring Commanders and Senior Enlisted Conference. The theme of the conference was “How we train and fight as a division,” which opened a dialogue on a range of command-related topics.
