The ceremony marked a milestone of peace in the region and to paid tribute to both U.S. and Japan veterans of the battles of Saipan and Tinian during World War II. During the ceremony, representatives from each branch of the U.S. military were present along with WWII veterans who served at Tinian and Saipan. Retired Gunnery Sgt. Samuel C. Bowser, right, and his wife, Yoshiko, blow out birthday candles at a picnic celebrating his 90th birthday May 25 at Comprehensive Park. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Bowser, a native of Duncansville, Pa., served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War during his 26-year military career. Mount Suribachi is the highest point on the island and was the location of Joe Rosenthal’s famous photo of five Marines and a corpsman raising a U.S. flag.
