Volunteers lined the finish line ready to throw color at the runners as they finished. The family friendly run was open to all ages of the military community. The Foster Girl Scouts are participating in the Girl Scout’s Global Action project, “Increasing Girls’ Access to Education.” The Girl Scouts filled backpacks to be handed out to kindergarteners in Thailand during Operation Cobra Gold. The Foster Girl Scouts made an assembly line with help from Marine volunteers and parents filling gently used backpacks with items such as: notebooks, a stuffed animal from home, and crayons. Seaman Apprentice Ariel C. Lissauer dons her hard hat - MCAS FUTENMA, OKINAWA, Japan – Seaman Apprentice Ariel C. Lissauer dons her hard hat Oct. 18 on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. Lissauer is the mastermind behind the creation, construction and execution of this year’s MCAS Futenma’s Haunted House dedicating over 100 hours to its creation. Lissauer’s experience as a Seabee helped her with all of the manual labor required to build the maze. With the haunted house opening around the corner, Lissauer waits anxiously for the feedback from the visitors. Cpl. Jessica A. Anstett executes a clean and press - CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan – Cpl. Jessica A. Anstett executes a clean and press Oct. 3 outside of Gunners Gym aboard Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan. Anstett was selected as Marine of the Quarter for Headquarters and Support Battalion, her athletic background and dedication to her work set her miles apart from her peers. In August of 2017, her whole world was pulled out from under her in an instant when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament for the second time. With her surgery looming on the horizon, she plans to continue to work out, take college classes and volunteer. In 2003, Barlue was deathly ill with Measles at refugee camp off of the Ivory Coast of West Africa, when the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps came on a humanitarian mission and saved his life with a vaccine. Because of their actions, Barlue enlisted in the Marine Corps and is determined to give back and leave an impact where ever he goes. Barlue works endlessly to better himself physically, mentally and spiritually. Gray Maynard demonstrates a technique - CAMP HANSEN, OKINAWA, Japan - Gray Maynard demonstrates a technique during a mixed martial arts clinic held by the MMA Cage Crusaders at the House of Pain Sept. 6 aboard Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan. Maynard and the three other instructors believe that hands on experience is the best way to learn. The MMA fighters taught a mixture of wrestling and jujitsu fighting style. After each period of demonstration the Marines were encouraged to practice the new moves. Terrin Spittle stands outside of the Jungle Warfare Headquarters Aug. 14 aboard Camp Gonsalves, Okinawa, Japan. Spittle embodies the warrior ethos of the Marine Corps. Mere weeks after being in a severe motorcycle wreck, Spittle stood alongside his men in the field, his flak compressing his injuries. Spittle’s contagious motivation continues to influence junior Marines across Okinawa as he leads the most grueling training on island.
