CAMP HANSEN, OKINAWA, Japan –A student practices writing Happy New Year in kanji at the Camp Hansen Library Jan. 8 aboard Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan. For centuries, calligraphy has been a worldwide visual art related to writing and each culture utilizes different tools, languages and strokes. Japanese calligraphy, known as Shodo, was heavily influenced by ancient China’s calligraphy, Shufa. The shape, size and type of hair in the brush as well as the pressure, inclination and direction all effect the boldness and smoothness of the strokes. (U.S Marine photo by Lance Corporal Tayler P.
