CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan – -- Marine Corps Air Station Futenma hosted the 21st Annual Ginowan City Youth Eisa Festival Sept. 23 – 24.
Eisa originated in Okinawa as a dance performance for their ancestors, but has gathered popularity around the world. In modern times, each Eisa group has its own unique dance style and attire. The spirit of the Eisa dance has stayed the same, bringing communities together in celebration and shared customs.
“The festival gives service members the chance to take part in the Okinawan culture and build relationships with the locals,” said Col. Mark Coppess, the commanding officer of MCAS Futenma. “The people of Ginowan are very gracious and welcoming neighbors.”
The festival featured 13 different youth groups performing Eisa dances they have practiced weeks to prefect. It gave Marines a chance to experience the local culture and make new friends.
“There is a great relationship between Ginowan City and MCAS Futenma,” said Atsushi Sakima, the mayor of Ginowan City. “We don’t do many joint events, but we go to each other’s hosted events. As mayor, I want the service members to be involved with as many of the local events as possible.”
Each day ended with an Eisa dance that everyone was encouraged to participate in. Though the event ended, attendees looked forward to future events.
“This was the first time my family and I have attended,” said Coppess. “We were really impressed with the dance ceremonies, the incredible food, and games for the children. I hope to bring many more Marines and their families to the event next year.”
