CAMP MCTUREOUS, OKINAWA, Japan – Staff Sgt. Paul I. Mead answers students’ questions about explosive ordnance disposal May 2 after a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Week EOD demonstration at Bechtel Elementary School on Camp McTureous, Okinawa, Japan. STEM Week fosters students’ career exploration and everyday observation of how science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be applied in everyday life as well as in future careers paths. During the EOD demonstration, Marines showed the students how they use robots and protective equipment. After the presentation students donned the protective equipment and underwent physical fitness challenges. Two children compete in a four-by-100 meter relay at the Kin Athletic Field in Kin Town, Okinawa, Japan May 9, during the Kin Town Friendship Track and Field Meet. The meet was organized by the Kin Town schools and the mayor of Kin Town to reach beyond the language barrier between the Okinawa residents and service members’ families through athletic events, according to Takayuki Kayo, the Camp Hansen community relations specialist and an Okinawa City, Okinawa, native. Students with the Ryukyu Rehabilitation Academy and Marines compete in a friendly game of tug-of-war Nov. 2 during the Ryukyu Rehabilitation Academy Festival. The festival included music by the III Marine Expeditionary Force Band, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program demonstrations and a friendly competition of tug-of-war. The students attend the Ryukyu Rehabilitation Academy and are residents of Kin Town. The band members are with III MEF band, III MEF.
