Naomi Felio talks with an elderly man Dec. 15 at the Okinawa Airakuen Sanatorium in Nago, Okinawa, Japan. Since 1938, the Nago Airakuen Sanatorium has been a convalescent home for leprosy patients or ex-leprosy patients. Service members from across Okinawa joined together to travel north to share their Christmas spirit with an elderly group who lives at the sanatorium. A CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter flies with a Humvee attached to it Oct. 7 here. The CH-53E is able to lift a max weight of 73,500 pounds, which includes its own weight, and is able to lift not only vehicles, but expeditionary bridges and even other aircraft. The CH-53E is with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, currently assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III MEF, under the unit deployment program. - A CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter flies with a Humvee attached to it Oct. 7 here. Brig. Gen. Niel E. Nelson, right, and Sgt. Maj. Tamara L. Fode carry their crippled chariot May 23 at Camp Kinser during a field meet. The field meet was in recognition of 3rd Marine Logistics Group’s 56th anniversary. Despite the rainy weather and muddy field, the day’s events included a pancake breakfast, 5-kilometer run, two multi-unit physical training sessions followed by unit competitions. The competitions pitted the most physically fit Marines within the respective battalions and regiments of 3rd MLG against each other in events such as pugil stick bouts, tug-of-war, Humvee pull, tire flip and a functional fitness relay. The culminating event was a sergeant major versus commanding officer chariot race. This year’s winning unit was Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd MLG, III Marine Expeditionary Force. After each attempt to capture and occupy Combat Town, the Marines received constructive criticism about areas where they could improve and then prepared to attack again.
