Marines are recognized for their voluntary work at the Winter 2017 Dance Showcase Dec. 14 at Koza Music Town, Okinawa, Japan. The showcase featured variety of dance styles such as, ballet, tap and contemporary. The dancers perform at many events throughout the year, competing with local dance studios across the island. Anstett was selected as Marine of the Quarter for Headquarters and Support Battalion, her athletic background and dedication to her work set her miles apart from her peers. In August of 2017, her whole world was pulled out from under her in an instant when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament for the second time. With her surgery looming on the horizon, she plans to continue to work out, take college classes and volunteer. Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is granted to a foreign national after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act. Families, friends, and leadership filled the seats to support and congratulate the new U.S. citizens. Children raced up and down the aisles waving small American flags saying things like “Mommy’s going to be an American!”

Depue speaks to the participants of the annual Chatan evacuation drill Sep. 8 aboard Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan. Each year, with Camp Foster’s support, Chatan performs an evacuation drill allowing the local community to familiarize themselves with the evacuation route in case of an emergency. Camp Foster has an agreement with Chatan and Ginowan City that in the event of a natural disaster, such as tsunamis, the local community can pass through the military base in order to safely and efficiently get to higher ground.
